The History of Ngurah Rai Airport

Ngurah Rai Airport first built at 1931 within the grassfield near the graveyard at Tuban Village. In 1941-1947 some renovation made to this Airport, the area was enlarge until 45 x 1600M, and rename it as Tuban Airport, because this airport located in Tuban. The building and some other flight facility first built at 1949. The international flight service began to operate at 1959, and get the agreement from ICAO (Internasional CIvil Aviation Organization) at 1963.

From 1965 until 1969 the Airport renovated again. At this time International Terminal Building start to built and enlarge the Run Way to 45 x 2700M. At August 1st 1969, Ir. Soeharto, the second president of Indonesia change the name of this Airport into Ngurah Rai International Airport and still used until this time. To anticipate the number of visitor and passenger, at 1975-1978 new International Terminal Building was built. And the old one used as Domestic Terminal Building. Since that time step by step build new facility to increase the number of visitor and still continues until this time.
